Phenolic/Phenol-Formaldehyde (PF) - Novolac

GP Chemicals for decades has been a leader in the development of PF novolac resins for a variety of industries. From coatings to wood adhesives, PF novolac resins have been the workhorse of industrial applications. Our expertise has resulted in innovative resins with diverse attributes.

Phenolic novolac resins are used to formulate high-performance varnishes and oil-based vehicles for air dry paints. Alkyl-substituted, these resins may be used in both conventional and high-solids varnishes, marine and maintenance coatings by either cold blending with oils or "cooking" or reacting with various oils. Phenolic resins are used as modifiers for various coatings including standard air-dry alkyd and two component epoxy primers. The incorporation of GP® phenolic resin can improve the adhesion, moisture resistance and corrosion resistance of the primer in applications such as maintenance and marine paint.

Phenolic resins are also used as curing agents or hardeners for epoxy resins in applications such as molding materials, laminates, coatings and adhesives. The phenolic novolac resins used are non-heat reactive materials by themselves, but have phenolic-OH groups that react with epoxy groups. Since the curing mechanism does not produce by-products, thick sections may be obtained without voids and stresses and with low shrinkage.

We manufacture an extensive line of phenolic resins for various foundry applications. Our RESI-FLAKE® resins were developed for use in the production of foundry shell molds and cores by the hot-sand process and our RESI-SHELL® resins are used in the production of foundry shell molds and cores by the warm air sand process.

GP Chemicals phenolic resins are also used for saturating substrates in applications such as oil and air filters, cooling water media and honeycomb door filler.
